Tiny Toy Testers: Sprig Toys

Tiny Toy Testers: Sprig Toys

If you are a parent, or even know some kids, you know that toys these days are primarily plastic. At our house, I sometimes feel like I am swimming in a sea of plastic toys, with small pieces that I trip over, or step on continually. Nothing breaks mommy’s vow to clean up her potty mouth like stepping on a small plastic toy- yikes!

In the past few years many toy companies have come up with ways of making greener products. In the toy space, this means a lot of wooden toys and organic cotton plush. While both of these are fantastic alternatives, there are some things that wood and cotton just can’t do. With this in mind, there are two companies that are making some really innovative products out of green materials. Green Toys Inc. makes toys right here in the USA out of 100% recycled milk bottles. They contain no BPA or phthalates or any of the other icky stuff. The tea sets are just adorable and can be used with real food since they are made of safe plastics.

Another company that is making strides in the toy space is Sprig Toys, a company out of Colorado. They make action adventure vehicles out of “Sprig wood” which is made from recycled wood and reclaimed plastics. In the video you will see the tiny toy testers playing with the Discover Rig. Notice: There are no batteries in this toy, it all happens with kid power, even the lights!

I didn’t get to capture one of the coolest things about this big truck on camera, but, there are three modes of play that you can switch up by using a button on the under side of the car. With the first mode, it is lights only, the second has truck sounds, and the third plays music and talks. The music and the saying will change when you put the different characters in the driver’s seat. And again, since there are no batteries, your little toy testers have to move the vehicle to get the sounds to happen. I love that this company really cares about not just the environment, but getting kids up and active (They also care about getting themselves active, check out “The Spriggest Loser” on their website!).

As you can see in the video, both tiny toy testers like the Discover Rig. The handle comes off the back, so it is something that can grow with my little guy. My daughter likes to put things in the top basket and drive them around. It has carried everything from dollies to books to tea sets. It is too bad we don’t have smell-o-blog here so that you can smell these toys too. They smell like a pine forest and remind me of my father’s woodworking shop. I am pleased because of all the batteries we’ll save and all the time changing them (it is a constant hunt for the small screwdriver in our house), the kids are pleased because it is a fun toy. Overall, it is a big thumbs up and hi-fives all around for Sprig Toys.
